“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch
People have a tendency to remain inside their comfort zones, and there could be a number of reasons behind this – perhaps they are scared of the possible outcomes, or just feel safe within what they know. This intangible zone however, isn’t just familiar faces or a happy place we can put our feet up with a cup of tea; as the guys at LifeHacker define the term to be a “behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk”. While this doesn’t sound too bad, it is important – and very beneficial – that we to step outside of these safety barriers, in order to evolve as individuals. Be honest, would you rather a life with no stress and risk, or one full of opportunity and adventure? I know what I’d choose.
But what is beyond the horizon of your comfort zone? This could be anything that makes you feel uncomfortable such as training at the gym or speaking in front of an audience. It may be something you have to do rather than want to do; like an assignment that requires you present a piece of work, or a job interview.
Something I like to tell myself when stepping out of my comfort zone is that, I have nothing to lose, and I may regret it if I don’t. These are useful mentalities to attain when trying something new. Let’s call them positive thoughts, and the fear of embracing outside of your circle, negatives. By constantly employing the positive thoughts when a new challenge or opportunity arises, you are essentially going to overcome those negative thoughts.
By remaining in your comfort zone, you are limiting yourself, and thus minimizing your ability to move forward. This links to last weeks lyrics by UK artist, Bugzy Malone; where if you stop – or in this case, stay in your comfort zone – you are essentially living for your demise. Pretty morbid stuff when you put it like this, but go check out the post for a full understanding.
More on the quote
In regards to Walsch’s quote, of course life can begin inside your comfort zone; that’s a given. However, your comfort zone could once have made you feel uncomfortable. For instance, when you learn to drive, it can be a daunting experience. Then after a while it becomes the norm. For those that don’t drive, what about when you started your first day of secondary school? I bet you were so used to it after a week or two.
These are great words to live by, in order to become a success and achieve more in life. So every time you have a doubt or a fear in doing something new, just remember “life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
