A soon to be new addition to the marvel franchise is ‘The New Mutants’. This is a new take on the superhero genre by director John Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and co-writer Chris Claremont (X-Men: Days of Future Past and Legion). In this new movie he subverts the superhero genre and adds in a horror element, not commonly seen in this genre. It revolves around five young mutants in a secret facility, fighting to find themselves and escape their troubles within.
This new take on the genre is intriguing and could lead to a change in the direction directors and writers take their projects in the future. An example of this was ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ where they took a more comedic approach, than traditionally used, and this was a successful decision for the movie and the franchise. I have high hopes for this flick based on the trailer released so far, it shows a grittier and darker side of the X-Men we haven’t seen yet. Despite the characters being lesser known members of the X-Men, I believe due to the success of series’ like ‘The Punisher’(Netflix), ‘Jessica Jones’(Netflix) and even ‘Legion’ (FX), this movie is not held back by the anonymity of the characters and has the potential to be highly successful.
However, with a fresh John Boone has brought with him a talented cast to lead the project with the likes of; Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) just to name a few. This could be a resurgence for the X-Men franchise and a refreshing palette cleanser for movie goers, much like Deadpool was.
