2018 African Nations Cup Kicks Off

Written by Bijan Shahrezaey in Sport

It’s that time of year again and African Nations Cup has begun its 5th edition of the tournament for the 2018 year.

The tournament, started in 2009 with Ivory Coast hosting the games. Congo took the trophy home, against 8 teams.

Interestingly this year, players can only compete for their teams if they currently play in the leagues of their respective nations; making the teams significantly fair regarding experience and level of football from the players. Perhaps we will see an underdog take the throne; similar to Zambia’s success in 2012.

Zambia’s team beat Ivory Coast in the Final 0-0 on penalties (8-7)

This year, 16 contenders compete, emphasising on how much the competition has progressed since the first edition. Therefore, four groups of four teams have formed:

Group A (Casablanca)

  • Morocco 🇲🇦
  • Mauritania 🇲🇷
  • Guinea 🇬🇳
  • Sudan 🇸🇩

Group B (Marrakech)

  • Uganda 🇺🇬
  • Ivory Coast 🇨🇮
  • Namibia 🇳🇦
  • Zambia 🇿🇲

Group C (Tangier)Nigeria 🇳🇬

  • Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶
  • Libya 🇱🇾
  • Rwanda 🇷🇼

Group D (Agadir)

  • Cameroon 🇨🇲
  • Congo 🇨🇩
  • Angola 🇦🇴
  • Burkina Faso 🇧🇫

The tournament takes place on Moroccan soil, where the hosts kick us off today at 7:30pm against Group A competitors, Mauritania.

Will Morocco collect their first win of the tournament, or can Mauritania seize first place in the Casablanca group right away?Comment what you think followed by predictions!
